I also know a guy who apperently did roughly the same thing to a paedo. Only, instead of nuking it, he sent the guy's passport to INTERPOL
CoJaBo 2017-01-15 13:46:37
(which, while hilarious, is not a good idea)

greetings
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:06:37
I befriended him swapped him a new HDD for his machine, then socially engineered his old pgp passphrase out of him (he thought I had wiped the HDD with all his sick stuff on it) and I took the whole thing in with passphrase to the police, a year later they investigated him as part of a paedo/animal sex ring and he got jail time while I walked away
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:09:04
He was working on access to children not yet in school and had shown sexual interest in children with animals (in a very sick way)
quem 2017-01-15 14:09:33
jeez.
berndj 2017-01-15 14:19:35
damn i wouldn't have the courage to be that kind of vigilante Belxjander - i'm glad you didn't end up in jail!
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:25:44
berndj: actually it was rather simple... I just offered to swap a drive I had for his (I just skipped the destruction part...) and documented everything discretely.
berndj 2017-01-15 14:26:23
Belxjander, i read what you wrote; i just wouldn't trust police to not just pad their stats by arresting me too
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:27:25
it helped that he was in the same share-house as I was... as I was the house SE, he saw I had boxes of tech laying around, so I just brought a couple of work jobs home, and let him make a request of the new hdd at cost...
berndj 2017-01-15 14:27:55
in my jurisdiction just having such stuff in one's possession is a crime, so i'd be majorly exposed even if i were truly and obviously to any reasonable person the good guy
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:29:37
berndj: off-site backups of my systems, and too much, along with picking up ammunition that I wrote into theirnotebooks which I signed overtop of...basically to protect myself. basically they were in a catch22 if they tried since I would have gone on record about evidence handling and static sensitive devices.
berndj 2017-01-15 14:30:18
whose notebooks?
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:30:22
It had also helpedthat when I handed evidence in I deliberately recorded giving them advice to be "static safe"

berndj 2017-01-15 14:31:25
i just don't see you having much if any leverage over an overzealous prosecutor here
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:32:35
quite simple really, history of being a police consultant + records of them mishandling evidence combined with already advisihg them against the same mishandling
berndj 2017-01-15 14:33:04
the prosecutor won't care about police mishandling evidence - that's just more convictions for him!
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:34:19
berndj: it was any evidence related to me personally which got mishandled, so any "expert" witness would be able to take that dept and instant dismissal of 10+years of that depts cases
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:34:44
kind of a bit too much for an overworked court
berndj 2017-01-15 14:41:17
me neither; relying on diy dismissable evidence just seems like more of a risk than i'd want to take
Belxjander 2017-01-15 14:42:38
well I got my stuff back and a thank you
berndj 2017-01-15 14:43:29
next time get a lawyer to help you! i'm sure considering the circumstances you could've found one who'd do it pro bono
