Is there any way to speed up the initial block sync? I'm running bitcoind inside a vagrant virtual machine
nkuttler 2017-01-15 00:16:06
poijgrh: a dbcache of 6G helps
BurningNetel 2017-01-15 00:18:25
poijgrh: previously it was faster to torrent the blockhain, but as of bitcoin core version 0.10.0 it is faster to just let the p2p protocol of your client download the blockchain.
poijgrh 2017-01-15 00:19:22
nkuttler: Can you pass "-dbcache 6G" to bitcoind? Unsure from the man-page I find here http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/precise/man1/bitcoind.1.html
BurningNetel 2017-01-15 00:19:23
you have to keep in mind that it's a huge file, about 100GB atm

poijgrh: that's probably right then

When starting bitcoind, it tells me "Using 4 threads for script verification". Can you up that number, and by doing that, speed up the initial sync?
BurningNetel 2017-01-15 00:32:29
poijgrh: if that number is the same as the amount of virtual cores you gave to the machine, then increasing the amount of threads does not speed up the verification
poijgrh 2017-01-15 00:32:47
BurningNetel: Got an 8-core cpu
BurningNetel 2017-01-15 00:33:05
What is the load on the machine?
poijgrh 2017-01-15 00:33:54
Load Avg: 4.80, 4.89, 4.92 CPU usage: 26.95% user, 60.75% sys, 12.29% idle
poijgrh 2017-01-15 00:33:58
from `top`
BurningNetel 2017-01-15 00:35:48
-par= Set the number of script verification threads (-2 to 16, 0 = auto, <0 = leave that many cores free, default: 0)

oh, if your download link is saturated, all of these things don't speed up the process, so you might want to check that first.
