Question about -blocknotify: Is it triggered during catch-up? If a node had been offline for 100 blocks, does it trigger 100 times? Or just the last 10 or so?

Chris_Stewart_5: yes, which is good scaling, it's linear (just a constant factor)

anyone care to explain the implications of Coinbase fighting the IRS requesting information from them? Is it really that bad? I mean...I don't use bitcoins for anything nefarious, and I don't mind being taxed on the proceeds since it has gone up.
gmaxwell 2017-01-13 07:21:54
cloaks: it's not bad-- the government doesn't normally have the right to demand the private records of masses of the public never even accused of a crime.
gmaxwell 2017-01-13 07:23:37
if a _single_ user gets audited or is otherwise accused of a crime coinbase will happly comply with an order to hand over records... but going fishing is at odds with the personal privacy, and a violation of the us constitution-- searches must name the specific persons and effects (fourth amendment)
gmaxwell 2017-01-13 07:24:07
the IRS's request if not fought would discourage people from using coinbase-- makes it sound like you become a suspect just by using it.

don't our banks cooperate with the government in this manner already? as I understood it, most government agencies are deeply in the pockets of most of our banks and can indiscriminantly 'target' swaths of people based on their financial habits, balances, etc
gmaxwell 2017-01-13 07:25:42
if congress wants to pass a law requiring bitcoin brokers to turn over certian information, then they could-- but they haven't and if they did that law would be properly narrowed to not excessively impinge on people.
cloaks 2017-01-13 07:25:55
I understand & I agree with you
cloaks 2017-01-13 07:25:58
Thanks :)
gmaxwell 2017-01-13 07:26:04
cloaks: absolutely not. The only cases where banks are turning over your records is after specific trigger... exactly the kind of narrowing I mention.
cloaks 2017-01-13 07:26:13
got it
gmaxwell 2017-01-13 07:26:24
e.g. they have to file specific reports about large value transactions, but when they do so they're not turning over all the other records.
