frib 2017-01-13 03:03:14
has the block size issue been resolved yet?
grubles 2017-01-13 03:07:56
yes
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:09:34
frib, no
arubi 2017-01-13 03:09:45
lol
grubles 2017-01-13 03:11:11
-.-
frib 2017-01-13 03:11:12
what is the probability that bitcoin will adopt changes to make it a fungible currency?
arubi 2017-01-13 03:11:21
100%
frib 2017-01-13 03:11:32
arubi, elaborate please
grubles 2017-01-13 03:12:09
there are already projects released and in development which improve fungibility
arubi 2017-01-13 03:12:13
the chances of the ecosystem adopting a change to make it (more) fungible is 100%
grubles 2017-01-13 03:12:14
(for bitcoin)
arubi 2017-01-13 03:12:21
if it works
Aloxander 2017-01-13 03:12:33
Hi, any traders here?
frib 2017-01-13 03:13:26
does fungibility effectively mean that transactions would no longer be traceable?
frib 2017-01-13 03:13:58
and that account balances would no longer be public information?
arubi 2017-01-13 03:14:20
there are no account balances
frib 2017-01-13 03:14:45
arubi, what do you mean
frib 2017-01-13 03:15:15
i am referring to public address bitcoin amounts being viewable in the blockchain
arubi 2017-01-13 03:15:23
and yes the issue is coin history, and visible amounts somewhat
arubi 2017-01-13 03:15:46
that's not someone's account balance. anyone can have many addresses
frib 2017-01-13 03:16:01
yes I am aware I meant an individual address
arubi 2017-01-13 03:16:08
and one address can be shared in between many people
arubi 2017-01-13 03:16:17
if it's some script for example
arubi 2017-01-13 03:16:28
some multisig* script
arubi 2017-01-13 03:16:53
frib, what's your real question?
frib 2017-01-13 03:18:35
initially there was a lot of discussion about 1) bitcoin being traceable by "authorities" and thus not suitable for private and/or illicit activities and 2) whether this was a good or bad thing for bitcoin
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:18:36
grubles, you really think the blocksize issue is solved?
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:19:21
frib: The definition of a currency is that it is fungible, bitcoin is not fungibile by default
frib 2017-01-13 03:19:27
i personally believe that the future of cryptocurrency in general would be a lot clearer if bitcoin would make the appropriate changes
frib 2017-01-13 03:19:50
and i think it being clear would accelerate its adoption and value
arubi 2017-01-13 03:20:05
it's not like anyone is preventing these changes and like grubles said there are a few projects already live that offer privacy with bitcoin txs
frib 2017-01-13 03:20:07
so my real question is.. are they going to make those changes?
arubi 2017-01-13 03:20:14
who's they?
frib 2017-01-13 03:20:28
the bitcoin nodes
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:20:29
frib: Read about cofidential transactions and mimblewimble
frib 2017-01-13 03:20:42
developers
arubi 2017-01-13 03:20:42
bitcoin nodes are software frib , not sure what you mean
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:20:45
but I doubt either of those will make it into bitcoin any time soon
frib 2017-01-13 03:21:02
arubi, developers and people who run nodes
arubi 2017-01-13 03:21:33
frib, folks who built joinmarket, tumblebit, are developers
frib 2017-01-13 03:21:35
Chris_Stewart_5, I think that's bad for bitcoin's value
arubi 2017-01-13 03:21:45
again, it's not like every service has to be in bitcoind
frib 2017-01-13 03:22:03
arubi, i've heard that those coin mixing technologies are not really reliable. true?
arubi 2017-01-13 03:22:16
where did you hear that from?
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:22:18
arubi: Have you read about tumblebit? I haven't had the chance yet, it is essentially a layered service ontop of bitcoin similar to lightning right?
grubles 2017-01-13 03:22:36
coinjoin is just using bitcoin in a novel way. technically, you could coinjoin from the start of bitcoin.
arubi 2017-01-13 03:22:42
Chris_Stewart_5, lemme get a link for you
grubles 2017-01-13 03:22:42
joinmarket just incentivizes it
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:22:45
similar in the layering aspect, not necessarily tx capacity
frib 2017-01-13 03:22:53
arubi, not sure exactly. but either way doesn't it complicate user adoption to have to use a service on top of a service that for the average person is already too complicated?
arubi 2017-01-13 03:23:06
Chris_Stewart_5, https://joinmarket.me/blog/blog/tumblebit-for-the-tumble-curious/

arubi 2017-01-13 03:23:27
frib, I dunno, seems fine to me
frib 2017-01-13 03:24:49
so why would anyone want bitcoin to be public in the first place? isn't privacy clearly more desirable?
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:25:18
frib: Unfortunately satoshi couldn't think of everything :-)
frib 2017-01-13 03:25:22
isn't it just a matter of time until people adopt a private cryptocurrency?
frib 2017-01-13 03:25:42
this is holding bitcoin back enormously
grubles 2017-01-13 03:26:11
well at least we're talking about it
grubles 2017-01-13 03:26:17
better than the block limit "debate"
grubles 2017-01-13 03:26:31
i've always said the real debate should be about privacy
frib 2017-01-13 03:26:52
aren't both very important? obviously?
frib 2017-01-13 03:27:24
what could possibly be so important about keeping the block size small that could not be outweighed by actually making bitcoin feasible for mass adoption?
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:27:37
frib: Yes, but we have limited man power to work on things. Perhaps you should volunteer to code on Bitcoin.
grubles 2017-01-13 03:28:02
obviously bitcoin is working fine with the current limit
frib 2017-01-13 03:28:12
Chris_Stewart_5, sorry I have a different career path. Unfortunately I am aware of what is going on though and the future of money is important to everyone, not just coders
Chris_Stewart_5 2017-01-13 03:29:02
frib: Only coders can get these features built that you are talking about. Consider funding someone to work on it then.
frib 2017-01-13 03:29:16
Chris_Stewart_5, i wouldn't be opposed to that
frib 2017-01-13 03:29:34
but at the same time i find it hard to believe that there are not a lot of people interested in working on bitcoin!
frib 2017-01-13 03:31:24
grubles, even if that's true. isn't it a mathematical certainty that when tranasction volume increases the block size limit will not be enough?
grubles 2017-01-13 03:31:53
not be enough for what?
grubles 2017-01-13 03:32:34
by that time, segwit + LN will be in use
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:33:36
grubles, stop being delusional
grubles 2017-01-13 03:34:22
what makes you think i'm deluded
trotski2000 2017-01-13 03:35:05
LN is a real breakthrough for Bitcoin. I'm really excited about it.
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:35:09
"will be in use", I mean it might be, but its not looking to favourably
arubi 2017-01-13 03:35:42
Xanather, so what's the reason it doesn't look favorable to you?
trotski2000 2017-01-13 03:36:20
Xanather: you can bet miners will end up signalling segwit. It's bad for their investment not to do so. They just want to show some muscle but the rational thing is to activate LN: increased de facto capacity, malleability fix... And LN, which adds TONS of value to BTC
grubles 2017-01-13 03:36:24
short term point of view
grubles 2017-01-13 03:38:11
did you think bitcoin was dead because of the mtgox crash too?
arubi 2017-01-13 03:38:36
obviously, that's when bitcoin ceo went to jail
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:39:45
grubles, why do you think I would think that
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:40:28
trotski2000, i was just going based off signalling graph, which has stalled for a month
krokodil 2017-01-13 03:40:55
hello
krokodil 2017-01-13 03:40:57

i have a 404 not found
trotski2000 2017-01-13 03:41:13
Xanather: read my previous comment. rational behaviour will prevail.
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:41:26
krokodil, its down surprisingly
krokodil 2017-01-13 03:41:45
:/
krokodil 2017-01-13 03:42:07
i have 400 bitcoins on my wallet
krokodil 2017-01-13 03:42:08

grubles 2017-01-13 03:43:01
bc.i sucks
trotski2000 2017-01-13 03:43:21
krokodil: having such an amount of money on blockchain.info seems like a very bad idea
Xanather 2017-01-13 03:44:05
trotski2000, why arn't they signalling now
grubles 2017-01-13 03:44:07
it's a terrible idea
