instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:46:05
bogon transaction?
Krypto6 2017-01-10 07:46:49
is ethereum any good?
grubles 2017-01-10 07:47:14
good at causing headaches, yes
grubles 2017-01-10 07:47:21
that's off-topic though
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:47:43
oops above was in the wrong channel. :P
Krypto6 2017-01-10 07:47:53
oh ok
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:48:02
instagibbs: by bogons I mean the block was the first place I ever saw the txn.
abpa 2017-01-10 07:48:21
Maybe it's due to out of band fee payments
marijnfs 2017-01-10 07:52:00
gmaxwell: what's a roundtrip
instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:52:17
marijnfs, your node needs to respond and ask for more transactions to fill out the block
instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:52:24
rather than fill in the holes with things it already has
instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:53:05
b->a, then a->b, b->a, instead of just b->a
marijnfs 2017-01-10 07:53:06
so some the transactions
marijnfs 2017-01-10 07:53:20
in the block were not seen when they were announced?
instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:53:31
not in your memory at least, right
marijnfs 2017-01-10 07:54:14
so was transaction propagation too slow then?
abpa 2017-01-10 07:54:50
Maybe they deliberately hid them so that in a case where they didn't have time to validate transactions they could still use that space
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:54:54
it's impossible for it to be fast enough to always catch everything. speed of light guarentees that different nodes will havve different views of the network.
marijnfs 2017-01-10 07:55:43
yeah but 30%?
marijnfs 2017-01-10 07:55:56
seems pretty systematic
instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:56:49
depends on the extra size, i set mine much larger and will report back once its warmed up
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:57:55
marijnfs: of course its systematic, the speed of light exists everywhere
marijnfs 2017-01-10 07:59:44
but you say of the blocks you see often contain transactions that you hadn't seen before; is it only a small portion of the transactions?
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:00:21
yes, usually 1.
abpa 2017-01-10 08:00:38
The coinbase?
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:00:49
no, we relay that in advance, so it doesn't count.
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:01:09
(because, duh, that one is always not known)
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:02:14
for the last 72 blocks here, here is number_of_blocks, number_of_txn_new_to_me

spudowiar 2017-01-10 08:03:01
lol
arubi 2017-01-10 08:03:07
so left column is #bogons ?
arubi 2017-01-10 08:03:15
oh sorry you said that already
arubi 2017-01-10 08:04:43
so is this a new statistic? did you only check 72 blocks up until now?
instagibbs 2017-01-10 08:05:21
in the xthin "BUIP" they say that 80% of the time they didn't have to coinbase
instagibbs 2017-01-10 08:05:28
which is uhhh what
arubi 2017-01-10 08:06:04
I'm trying to find some way for that to make sense but I can't
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:09:35
^^++
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:10:04
gmaxwell: is that good though, doesn't sigyn do... usefull stuff now and then?
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:10:27
if it's false klining me every couple months god knows what its doing to other users.
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:10:38
I'm persistant enough that I'll come back and complain, other people won't.
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:11:05
maybe staff can disable the flood protection for this channel? no idea how it works
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:11:40
anyways, what did I miss?
fireduck 2017-01-10 08:11:43
Especially with global climate change, floor protection is pretty important
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:11:48
just making fun of you
arubi 2017-01-10 08:14:11
gmaxwell, I was asking if that's some new statistic that you're following or is it just a 72 block window?
arubi 2017-01-10 08:14:13
somehow missed the drop I guess
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:14:59
it's just the last 72 blocks from the perspective of my desktop.
arubi 2017-01-10 08:16:40
is that just information from debug.log? I mean, can I follow that too locally?
bitcoin059 2017-01-10 08:18:32

But I just love free Bitcoins, awww
arubi 2017-01-10 08:20:20
probably need to run bitcoinfibre? I guess I could run that instead
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:20:51
arubi: nothing to do with fibre.
instagibbs 2017-01-10 08:21:08

^^^ WARNING: any URL may lead directly or indirectly to COIN-STEALING MALWARE! ^^^
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:21:16
it's just data based on the 'Successfully reconstructed block' lines you get when debug=mempool
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:21:30
with extra data related to PR9499
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 08:21:55
my stats were actually meant for another window where we'd been discussing 9499
arubi 2017-01-10 08:22:17
understood, I'll be checking it out. thanks both
fireduck 2017-01-10 08:22:34
why not add 501 and make it an even PR10000
arubi 2017-01-10 08:22:46
it's already over 9000!
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:23:09
If I post an encrypted illegal file block to Facebook is that breaking the law?
cloaks 2017-01-10 08:23:27
define "the law"
arubi 2017-01-10 08:23:29
is doing illegal things breaking the law?
arubi 2017-01-10 08:23:36
probably.
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:23:51
but it's encrypted, and meaningless
arubi 2017-01-10 08:24:03
then how can you tell it's illegal?
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:24:10
So its not?
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:24:16
sTRANGEbUTtRUE: who cares, it would be spam
arubi 2017-01-10 08:24:18
you just said it isnt?
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:24:22
What if, a day later, I release the password and point at the block
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:24:28
Is that illegal?
arubi 2017-01-10 08:24:37
the password? releasing it? the file?
cloaks 2017-01-10 08:24:41
what even is an 'illegal file block' exactly? lol
arubi 2017-01-10 08:24:42
the file, probably..
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:25:05
What if I own the website and I post the block there.
arubi 2017-01-10 08:25:06
releasing it, depends on the laws of your state I guess..
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:25:15
sTRANGEbUTtRUE: how is this discussion relevant to this channel?
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:25:18
I release the password here, but someone reports it to the police
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:25:28
Do I have to remove the block as its "illegal"
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:25:32
from my site?
arubi 2017-01-10 08:25:32
I guess you need a lawyer..
cloaks 2017-01-10 08:25:46
sTRANGEbUTtRUE this has absolutely nothing to do with bitcoin...
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:26:28
Just making conversation.
arubi 2017-01-10 08:26:41
but the topic says no illegalities... so..
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:26:50
sTRANGEbUTtRUE: this channel is primarily for help with bitcoin, try ##chat
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:27:24
Thanks
Chillum 2017-01-10 08:27:48
if you are not caught, it is not illegal. Simple
arubi 2017-01-10 08:28:05
well if you're not caught then you can't be punished
Chillum 2017-01-10 08:28:06
(not really)
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:28:14
We can assume, this will be reported upon then
arubi 2017-01-10 08:28:25
but it's still illegal. the can't be punished part is a flaw there
Chillum 2017-01-10 08:28:28
of course the NSA is recording all of this, god bless them
arubi 2017-01-10 08:29:24
they don't have to. almost everyone logs and they can probably just pick it up from your system :P
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:29:29
Could you report a website for hosting a plain-text block of encrypted gibberish is what I'm wondering
Chillum 2017-01-10 08:29:40
you can report anything you want
arubi 2017-01-10 08:29:45
a plain text of encrypted gibberish..
Chillum 2017-01-10 08:29:48
you can write a song about it
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:29:51
but I guess with the key - it's not so encrypted any more
arubi 2017-01-10 08:29:52
the mind can not comprehend
nkuttler 2017-01-10 08:30:01
sTRANGEbUTtRUE: please find a better forum for your questions
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:30:20
Rightyho
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:31:28
I can make it bitcoin related if you like
arubi 2017-01-10 08:32:50
sTRANGEbUTtRUE, we've heard it all already. in this case, "hosting" the blockchain can probably be interpreted by the law to mean a lot of things
arubi 2017-01-10 08:33:09
distinguished universities run tor relays and exit nodes
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:33:21
Sure. So I put some illegal content in the blockchain, can i send you to jail?
Michail1 2017-01-10 08:33:27
Warned enough times. This channel is for bitcoin, now how you can try to evade illegal activities.
Michail1 2017-01-10 08:33:36
damn, I wanted to do it.
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:34:15
One way ticket to jail
sTRANGEbUTtRUE 2017-01-10 08:34:22

kickmeandloseura 2017-01-10 08:36:09
