guys what is your opinion on saving a big amount of btc on trezor?
bicc 2017-01-10 06:45:14
I was thinking to just put all my btc there
Pilate 2017-01-10 06:45:21
thats what i do
Pilate 2017-01-10 06:45:25
trezor is the shit
bicc 2017-01-10 06:46:11
ok. I am afraid that the hardware might be compromised. Not sure if it can happen though. For example if I order from someone that did something on the device...
Pilate 2017-01-10 06:47:40
you can always flash the firmware yourself when you get it
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:49:04
bicc: honestly I would only trust a life changing amount of money to Core
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:49:16
is the more peer-reviewed wallet
bicc 2017-01-10 06:49:45
trotski2000 hmm yes I see
bicc 2017-01-10 06:49:54
Pilate good to know!
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 06:49:55
if you're talking about a serious amount of bitcoin you should have an offline machine.. you can buy an old thinkpad for $30.
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:50:07
yep, offline machine with Bitcoin Core
grubles 2017-01-10 06:50:30
you can do offline signing with Core, fyi
bicc 2017-01-10 06:50:40
gmaxwell ok so if I buy an offline machine is there a guide on how I set up everything? I just don't want to go and download a wrong piece of software because of phising or something like that
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:51:34
bicc: sure, there are many tutorials online. Check: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/How_to_set_up_a_secure_offline_savings_wallet
piqure 2017-01-10 06:51:35
^^^ WARNING: any URL may lead directly or indirectly to COIN-STEALING MALWARE! ^^^
bicc 2017-01-10 06:52:04
trotski2000 thank you
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:53:00
bicc: alternatively you can take Core to the offline machine and generate there the address - there you send the btc. In any case DO backup your wallet
bicc 2017-01-10 06:53:51
trotski2000 ok great. seems like the best approach
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:54:37
bicc: if you look online you will find tutorials for "user friendlier" solutions - like generating an electrum seed offline and storing it on paper. I never heard of people losing coins to it, but as I said earlier I prefer to go with the more peer reviewed wallet with dozens of talented developers working on it - Bitcoin Core.
fireduck 2017-01-10 06:55:38
My two satoshis is that electrum is easy to use correctly and a very good idea for new users.
bicc 2017-01-10 06:56:04
cheers. well I will go with that. I might be over-reacting to be honest but I am really scared with all these hacks.
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:56:18
fireduck: I agree. But at the same time electrum is a privacy shitshow
bicc 2017-01-10 06:56:19
fireduck: yup - last time I used electrum
fireduck 2017-01-10 06:56:49
trotski2000: my solution is to write and then run my own server.
trotski2000 2017-01-10 06:57:30
fireduck: yep, running your own server solves the privacy issue. What do you mean by write?
fireduck 2017-01-10 06:57:50
I wrote an alternative electrum server implementation
fireduck 2017-01-10 06:58:10
It is one of three now
fireduck 2017-01-10 06:58:55
There is the original python one, electrum-server. Mine in java using a varity of key-stores, jelectrum.
fireduck 2017-01-10 06:59:13
There is a new one in python, eletrumx which runs very fast. I need to do some catch up.
fireduck 2017-01-10 06:59:41
And since the server just provides chain information and handles no keys it is safe to run strange servers and see how it goes.
grubles 2017-01-10 07:00:59
yep electrumx is python3
grubles 2017-01-10 07:01:01
iirc
fireduck 2017-01-10 07:01:37
I'm not a python guy so that didn't seem important but yeah
instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:26:54
what's the command to get the hidden command in bitcoin-cli again
instagibbs 2017-01-10 07:27:00

#bitcoin: Beware of scams! Scammers are sending users private messages with bitcoin-stealing malware and offers to trade. We are unable to stop them, so you must protect yourself. NEVER download or run programs from strangers! When in doubt, ask the ops.
grubles 2017-01-10 07:38:34
my poor laptop is syncing all the chain data to run insight
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:41:38
out of the last 72 blocks here,
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:41:39
.30555555 needed an extra round trip
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:41:39
.51388888 no round trip even without extra.
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:41:39
.16666666 saved from a round trip by extra
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:41:59
several of the extra misses could have been extra hits if the extra queue was larger.
gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:42:19

gmaxwell 2017-01-10 07:42:35
I've noticed more blocks containing bogon transactions lately.
