I wonder when I grow old, if I will be hugging/holding onto bitcoin and refusing to use bio-coin and bio-net or whatever is the the new fad :D
plorph 2017-01-11 18:45:28
hahaha
plorph 2017-01-11 18:45:43
i thought it was interesting the idea of sidechains
plorph 2017-01-11 18:45:56
it could make these coins, eternal, while the underlying network structures change
plorph 2017-01-11 18:46:10
bitcoin could be insanely valuable
intx 2017-01-11 18:48:04
Andreas M. Antonopoulos thinks bitcoin/cryptocurrency will be life-changing, in the same way the internet was, but he is unsure whether it will be 'bitcoin' that will be the future or a variant of it
plorph 2017-01-11 18:50:37
right
plorph 2017-01-11 18:50:45
im mostly thinking that way also
plorph 2017-01-11 18:51:16
but the fact that sidechains are possible means that coins aren't necesarily trapped to their networks, which was particularly interesting to me
plorph 2017-01-11 18:51:52
so really any majorly more sophisticated network would be that, the underlying network, while your assets could carry over
plorph 2017-01-11 18:52:04
i think anyways, i dont know
intx 2017-01-11 18:55:21
don't know either, but I am glad bitcoin exists
intx 2017-01-11 18:55:39
and I am surprised at it's adoption rate
intx 2017-01-11 18:55:50
(positive)
plorph 2017-01-11 18:56:23
it always puts a smile on my face when i hear people i consider pretty smart doubt bitcoin, simply because they haven't spent the time to understand it
plorph 2017-01-11 18:56:52
yeah it hasn't been bad
plorph 2017-01-11 18:57:37
i love hearing stories of its success in places like venezuala where the economy has gone to shit
intx 2017-01-11 18:59:04
I am surprised how US, China, Canada, most European countries all basically said bitcoin is legal but an asset
plorph 2017-01-11 18:59:30
why?
plorph 2017-01-11 18:59:37
why are you surprised i mean
gmaxwell 2017-01-11 18:59:49
it's not at all surprising.
gmaxwell 2017-01-11 19:00:09
trying to say bitcoin is illegal in the US would bring pretty much an immediate constutional fight.
plorph 2017-01-11 19:00:17
how so?
plorph 2017-01-11 19:00:41
this is something ive been curious about, seems they could easily shutdown gateways between fiat and bitcoin
gmaxwell 2017-01-11 19:01:17
because it's a property right-- and generally you can't go just taking them without a strong argument grounded in the enumerated powers of the government. Now, regulated to obnoxiousness, yes... thats more possible.
gmaxwell 2017-01-11 19:01:45
I think a lot of people don't realize how powerful the legal protections are in the US simply because in spite of those powers it still does a lot of dumb stuff. :)
gmaxwell 2017-01-11 19:02:18
Did you know that there are local currencies used in many places in the world, including several in the US?
plorph 2017-01-11 19:02:19
that there would be a huge backlash of property ownership rights
plorph 2017-01-11 19:02:43
example in US?
TheButterZone 2017-01-11 19:03:24

^^^ WARNING: any URL may lead directly or indirectly to COIN-STEALING MALWARE! ^^^
gmaxwell 2017-01-11 19:03:46
well perfect examples being why we don't have effective carbon controls in the US, or federal gun prohibitions.
plorph 2017-01-11 19:05:07
whats the connection?
intx 2017-01-11 19:06:09
I actually thought there was a chance bitcoin would be deemed illegal under the laws of counterfeit currency
plorph 2017-01-11 19:06:20
guns is kind of special case right because it kinda has its own amendment
CoJaBo 2017-01-11 19:06:22
..wat
CoJaBo 2017-01-11 19:07:16
intx: People have been issuing their own curriencies (e.g., scrip) since long before Bitcoin
plorph 2017-01-11 19:08:01
in the US? other countries aren't so friendly to that right?
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:09:45
in general, what is the cheapest way to acquire BTC? Cheapest as in, least fees/most favorable conversion ratio. Time or exact timing is not an issue, just looking to buy a few more sometime next few months.
intx 2017-01-11 19:10:04
CoJaBo: at the time, people were citing e-gold
intx 2017-01-11 19:10:08
BitcoinBro: where are you from?
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:10:13
finland
intx 2017-01-11 19:11:44
hmm I'm not from europe so I'm not really sure, but probably bitcoin.de or bitstamp, check deposit/withdraw/trade fees
CoJaBo 2017-01-11 19:12:06
Coinbase is available almost everywhere.
CoJaBo 2017-01-11 19:12:29
Don't store lots of Bitcoin there (or in any exchange) tho, ofc
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:12:34
these are commercial services right?
intx 2017-01-11 19:12:40
yes
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:12:44
and you're saying they'd be the cheapest?
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:12:47
heh
intx 2017-01-11 19:12:52
usually yes
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:12:58
almost never, no :)
intx 2017-01-11 19:13:20
you can try #bitcoin-otc also
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:14:09
if you can find the right individual, a dude opposite of me looking to sell a few BTC sometime soon, then we could cut out the middleman
intx 2017-01-11 19:15:11
if you do find one, cheaper than any exchange you have access to, in a few month period, in Finland, please let me know how you did it :)
intx 2017-01-11 19:15:21
you could probably write a blog and it'd be an interesting read
intx 2017-01-11 19:15:43
because in my experience, I've found it cheaper to use a commercial exchange
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:17:26
i sold one bitcoin to a guy in latvia this summer that I found through localbitcoins, we did a cash exchange according to a rate we got online and i transferred the coin with my phone to him. so that was 100% free. but i'm not seeing anyone on localbitcoins in my city
BitcoinBro 2017-01-11 19:17:57
so i was wondering where else people like this meet each other. i'll look into the other irc channel you mentioned
intx 2017-01-11 19:18:16
localbitcoins is probably the best source, but sure, try the bitcoin-otc as well
HungDaddy 2017-01-11 19:22:09
in general do people look for face to face exchange type situation on that channel?
TheButterZone 2017-01-11 19:22:45
no
midnightmagic 2017-01-11 19:30:15
TD-Linux: Ah, you got an early-access HiFive1? The others are apparently slated to ship in February.
